I can remember being young and spending time in the church basement with the other kids, although I don't remember much except play and watching the other kids. I can remember squirming in the pew between my parents, uncomfortable with the stillness required, and the joy I felt when it was time to sing a hymn, especially if I knew it.

When I was old enough to ask the question, "Why do I have to go to church?" my mother said, "We want you to go to church with us until you are 12. Then you can make your own decision. But we want you to have something to choose from."

When I was 12, I promptly opted for sleeping in on Sundays rather than going to church, except on Easter and Christmas, when I went and joyfully sang my favorite hymns.

I spent years questioning the existence of God, the necessity of going to church to find God, and the hypocrisy I noted in religion throughout history. For instance, the Crusades...... Blowing up abortion clinics and killing people to save lives..... all that stuff we have all read about, and a lot of personal stuff we've experienced "in the name of religion, in the name of God."

When my mother was diagnosed with cancer in the mid 80s, I went back to church. The minister of our local church was visiting her, and I figured it was the least I could do to return the favor. I liked him. I really liked him. He spent his sermon time defining passages in the Bible in terms of the language of the time when those passages were written. For the first time I actually understood what some of those passages meant. And for the first time, I made the choice to go to church, rather than going because I was told. And for a long time I attended church on a regular basis.

I don't have children of my own. If I did, I'm sorry to say that I probably would not have required them to go to church until they were 12, because I probably would not have been willing to go with them. That's sad, because a lot of people are raising children, or have raised children, without any awareness of God, or whatever their societal name for a higher being is.

That's not to say that hundreds of thousands of people are willing - I know several families who happily attend their chosen church.

But what about us? What about the ones who question a conventional, traditional church? Where can we find God?

I believe there is a growing need for Spiritual haven and understanding. I believe there is a universal need to know that there is something out there 'bigger than us.' I believe there is a thirst in many of us to drink from a well of spiritual guidance, who don't find solace in traditional religious orders, due to lack of understanding, lack of awareness (not having had to "go to church until they are 12") or simply a bad experience in some church or another which colors their view of "religion."

If you are one of those who are experiencing that thirst, go looking for a spiritual drink. Start reading some of the many 'higher awareness' books out there. It really doesn't matter where you start, whether in a traditional church, Protestant, Catholic, Temple, Christian Science, Muslim, or countless others. Or maybe a moving practice which combines body and soul - tai chi, yoga and the like. Or just a book, there are so many that I don't even want to list one, because it is your choice.

I believe there is one premise that is the basis for every spiritual practice out there, except the practice of evil. If it's good, it's God. If it's not good, it's not God. (I don't know if that's a quote or not, but I know I've heard it spoken just like that. I do not take credit for the words, I only have infinite faith in them.)

Give it a try. It just might catch on.

Thanks for listening this morning.

By the way, personally speaking, I found spiritual guidance that works for me (after three decades of searching) at www.theshift.com in the words of Beca Lewis, founder of The Shift® System. If you're not sure where to start, you can always start there. I am a Certified Shift® Trainer now, so you'll see me somewhere around there now, but that's not why I'm writing this this morning. Or maybe it is!

Put yourself into the equation

Most self-help books are not self-help books. They're 'maps.' They are the author's self-help recipe, and map to what works for them. Which is why, a lot of times, following the 'map' works for a while, and then it doesn't. The BEST self help book tells a parable, guides us and gives us clear information, but leaves a part of the 'map' open to interpretation, because the only way to truly help yourself is to adapt the 'map' to your own unique expression.

And if the self-help gurus give us the 'map' and tell us to do it their way, they leave us out of the equation. Hence, the reason that so many great gurus say the story must be learned in parable.

We have to work at it, become a part of it, in order for the guidework to be successful. The enigma, the "problem" to solve, the parable to understand, is actually just a way of putting US (I Am) into the equation.

My personal favorite guru is Beca Lewis, who wrote Living in Grace - The Shift to Spiritual Perception (you can read about Beca and get the book by clicking on the link)

Two others I follow faithfully are Michael Masterson and Perry Marshall. What they say is pertinent, clear, evocative and inspiring.

The three follow different focuses but the message is pretty clear....

Here's to your balanced equation!

Awesome

I don't ever want my Understanding of The Shift® Things weren't "going my way" and I was really beginning to go to that grrrrr place. I got in the truck and the radio was on (usually it's on cd because I am listening to my inspirational cds, but Scott drove the truck last) and out belted Starship and "We built this city on rock and roll" - I turned the volume way up and experienced an immediate mood switch to happiness and joy. Nothing changed but my mood. However, as a result of that, I had a much better day, I imagine I was a lot more fun to be around, as a matter of fact I'm SURE I was more fun to be around, and I was thinking more clearly, and things sort of resolved themselves around the day.

Face and replace. For me, it's the little practical examples that have the biggest impact....

Love, Jet

Got questions about the terms used in this blog? I use The Shift(R) My husband was outside tending to our horses and we occasionally forget to unlock the door when stepping outside for a quick chore.

I checked the door and sure enough, it was unlocked, so he could get back inside. Content, I set off to check the woodstove in another part of the house.

Moments later, I heard the dog bark, and hurried back to see what had alarmed her, knowing it was my husband, but wondering what the problem was. He was stuck at the inner door, which was locked, and I had not checked it.

I don't profess to be a psychic, or a telepath, but I do know that what we see in the outside world is a reflection of what we are thinking. I knew, intuitively, that I should check the door to make sure my husband could get back in the house easily. After all, we had both occasionally locked either each other or ourselves out; however, I checked the wrong door! Or maybe I didn't complete the process of "checking." Whichever it was, I know one thing - I knew I needed to look more closely at something, and I stopped the process too soon based on an assumption and a previous experience.

So what did I learn? That I am listening, and hearing, which is the good news. Now I just need to practice a little more to follow through completely to the correct focus, whether that is a more thorough listen, or a focus on the "right door."

Have a great day listening and focusing!

Jet

Distractions while reflecting on the meaning of us

I woke up New Year's Eve morning thinking, "but if we are an idea of God, then what is our purpose?" So instead of panicking, I let the thought unfold.

I like that word, unfold. Like blooming, an oriental poppy slowly unfurling like a piece of plastic wrap relaxing and moving and expanding after being wadded up in one's fist. And just as wrinkly, but each wrinkle tells a story, relates an experience, and gives character. And as we let go, the wrinkles "iron" out and what little remains just adds to the beauty of the blossom, like laugh lines on a beautiful woman's face.

So are we to experience? Collect laugh lines? I would like to think so. But even more than that, I think our purpose is to find our way back to that unique idea that we were designed to express, and peel away everything else. It doesn't matter what we "do" - pick something we love and that inspires us - but the doing has to express that unique idea that we are. And then life becomes meaningful, as we define it.

Define, Design and Deliver! That's meaning!

Gratitude

Okay, New Year's Resolution - I will no longer feel guilt for what appears to be procrastination..... :-)

I have been reading blog posts by all of my favorite and inspiring authors for the past week, and they have one prevailing thing in common -

The most successful people in the world express Gratitude for everything that they have - including, and sometimes especially! the challenges!

Go read Beca Lewis, Perry Marshall, Michael Masterson. Every post expresses thanks for all that we have, and nowhere do they whine about what they don't have.

So, what it looks like is, to keep it Simple, express Gratitude. I looked up to see a bright shaft from the sun's rising peak through a peep hole between the tree line and the clouds off to the east. Only by watching the tree line could I see the movement of the grey mass which looked stationary everywhere else, so I watched right there as the light of the sun appeared to move and brighten and fade, depending on the density of the cloud cover.
For a moment, I was distracted by a memory of taking off from the airport in a rainstorm, speeding down the runway, lifting into the air, climbing through the water and mist until I could see nothing but grey, and all of a sudden breaking through to a gorgeous panorama of blue sky, white puffy mountains of clouds and yellow, yellow sunshine. I still can feel the thrill of that view!
The sun is shining. The sky is blue. God is good. And just because I can't see it from my porch window right this moment doesn't mean that's not true!

The One with the Clearest Intent Wins

I've been waking up with a theme of a song running through my head for over a week now.
I listen to Grace Notes http://perceptionu.com/free-stuff-for-everyone every morning, so my first inclination was to think it is a Grace Note.

So what did I do about it?
I sang it to myself for a day or two, thinking I would forget it or remember it.
Then I took my little digital audio recorder I use to record thoughts while I'm driving (it's much safer than writing while driving, and if I don't put the thoughts down, I forget them) and sang it so that I could definitely remember it. Then I emailed my friend who wrote the music to Grace Notes www.jamielewismusic.com and asked her if we could chat and try to figure out which one it is.

Are you getting the point? I did everything I possibly could to avoid the simplest, most direct method of determining if this music came from Grace Notes - listen to the Grace Notes!

Who had the clearest Intent here? Me? Or whatever was trying to distract me from my purpose, which is finding out what the music is I keep hearing. Yah, I knew you'd know the answer to that one.....

This morning, I listened to the beginnings of the Grace Notes I own (um, ALL of them) until Voila! There was the theme! It's Grace Notes - Fulfillment. And the reason I was hearing that song, I believe, was to direct me to listen to the words Beca Lewis and Del Piper www.perceptionu.com read along with it, and focus on fulfilling my Purpose, by becoming the best I Am of Who I Am...

And I think, maybe, to focus on Clearing up My Intent, and maybe, to pass the message on to you.....

Keeping it Simple, If we don't express what the curriculum suggests, we are considered to be below or above average, which is an imaginary stake in the ground by which to measure all of us.

Our churches set up guidelines by which to live, suggesting appropriate behavior, lifestyle and thought. They give us language to live by, and if we don't understand the language, or don't speak the language, or don't practice the language as it is written, then it looks like we don't fit in.

Why do we do this?

Because we have a need to be connected, to fit in, to feel like we are not alone. If we're not "like the others," we feel separate, afraid and alone.

Well, here's a thought for you -

What if we are all pieces of a jigsaw puzzle? Each piece can only fit into one unique spot. If we try to fit into a spot that doesn't fit us, we either deny the correct piece the space to fill, or we feel "left out," and separate. In Truth, we don't fit that particular space, but we do all fit in. In fact, we all are necessary to each other, because as we search out and try spaces and find our perfect spot, all of us make up the perfect whole picture.

The finished picture is always there. It's right there and available for us to see, all the time, everywhere. Until we are all willing to seek out and take our rightful, unique place, see and express our own unique shape (gift), we just can't see it, that's all.

Therefore, I propose to all of us that it is, in fact, our uniqueness that harmonizes with the Universe, not our conformity. After all, it takes different voices to make harmony, doesn't it?

What about that?

I am sitting here surrounded by books.

I LOVE books. Nearly every book I've ever picked up has given me something of value, even the ones I hated on sight and didn't finish. Books are words and pictures and interpretations of someone else's understanding of the universe. To agree is to ratify my own thinking - to object is to stretch my awareness.

An obligation to thrive?

I made a comment yesterday that surprised even me! And yet, when I looked at it, I realized that it's perhaps the most honest thing that has ever come out of my mouth, and most probably came from the very deep recesses of my knowing, that still, small voice within....

We have an obligation to thrive.

Of all the "shoulds" we are taught, this one seems to be the most evasive. Why? Because we are taught that we "should" do something in a prescribed way. Trouble is, whose prescription are we following? And is it really the right prescription for us?

My father said to me, when I was in my twenties, "Jean (my given name), if you can't marry a doctor, lawyer or dentist, become one."

My beloved creative writing professor told me, when I declared my intention to major in English, "Perhaps you ought to pursue a different career."

My church told me, "Tis better to give than receive."

For a very long time, and perhaps still in the back of my mind, I believed all of these prescriptions. However....

I'm much better at numbers crunching than medical terms.
I write pretty well if I'm writing about something I am truly passionate about.
And if we're giving all the time, how does the other person get to feel good about giving?

It is very difficult to feel like we are thriving if we are perceiving ourselves through someone else's prescription. And you know what?

We are always thriving. We have all of the gifts in front of us, available to us, in untold abundance, all the time. However, as long as we see ourselves through what appears to be other people's eyes and perception, we will never see those gifts. As long as we are measuring our wealth by the world's yardstick, we will never see that we measure up and more, just by breathing in this very moment.

Not only do we have an obligation to thrive, we ARE thriving. We can't help it, it's who we really are.

Take off the world colored glasses and see yourself for the wonder and awe that you are.

See that you are meeting your obligation to thrive right now.

We are all waiting to see........

Focus Five Intent

Most of the time, it's not the outside world that keeps you from getting where you want to be. Well, it all comes down to your point of view. Although there are many people in the world who would challenge me on this, I think I already am pretty real and down to earth. Just because I believe Harry Potter does exist doesn't make me any less a realist!

Fortunately, science is beginning to agree with me in this, because there are many statements out there, and many people quoting those statements, that what we see "outside" is really a matter of what we are thinking within. WE color our world. Now, don't go out and sentence yourself because you're not living like Bill Gates or Warren Buffet - whatever is going on is not you creating your world. It's more that you are living in a habit, a framework you've been given throughout your life, and because you are designing with incomplete information, you have an incomplete picture.

What does this have to do with magic? Here's some magic for you - change your thinking and change your life. It's simple, and it's the most challenging thing you will do in your life. How's that for magic?

I'm going to be writing a lot more about this, because I feel so strongly about it that I have to share it. Mom first, then Dad nine years later. When Mom was ill, Dad and I shared the home care of her, before it was accepted under most insurances, and consciously opted by my dad. During that year and a half (Mom was a fighter and outlasted all prognoses by more than a year), Mom and I developed a relationship we never could have had she died suddenly or not been ill. Did I want her to suffer? NO WAY! But her choice was to Live, and I respected that and took the opportunity to relate to her.

Then Dad was diagnosed, with "a little cancer". It turned out to be a huge tumor, the full length of his esophagus and was cutting off his esophagus so that he could not eat solid foods comfortably any more. He opted for surgery, survived the surgery and died of complications from post surgery. Six months. Quick. His Choice.

What's the point? I was blessed to have many, many valuable years with my parents. I was also single, and had only one long term relationship while my folks were alive. Long story of old ingrained habits.

Dad was tired of the game, I think, but he was worried about me. He wanted to make sure I was taken care of and happy. At the same time, he wanted me to take care of the rest of the family (all OLDER than me, not younger). I met Scott in the spring of 96. We slowly got acquainted, as he had some issues, and I had a father with cancer. We had our first date on October 13, 1996. My dad was operated on in that week. When he was in ICU, I went up to visit him (Boston, a two hour drive if no traffic, 3 times a week), and he was really good then. He said to me, "What's different about you?" I said, "I met someone." His whole face changed. He looked happy and comfortable for the first time in months. I would almost say he looked relieved. And two weeks to the day after Scott's and my first date, he died. He knew, before I did, that I had finally "met my match."

I think THAT's the meaning of, when you are seeing something, you are either seeing the quality (good), or the inverse of the quality (what appears to be bad, but if you invert that, you can always see to the good). You don't know why you are seeing something in a particular way sometimes, but you can always look through the world view of suffering and pain and Consciously Choose to see the Love, loving Itself.

http://www.theshift.com/jettucker.html

Mortgage Forgiveness

May I suggest that anyone who is concerned, worried about foreclosure or other issues surrounding his or her home consult with a professional before taking action, one way or the other? I just went searching on the internet and found a HUD website for what they are calling free mortgage counseling for affected homeowners. What I liked best about the site is the little link called "scams." Yes, there are those out there who may not be precisely what they say they are. And because I have been to the HUD websites before, they look authentic. However, please do not click on a link in another email or website. Please search Housing and Urban Development or HUD to get to a verified website from your home page search link.

There IS help for affected homeowners out there.
